How to Get to Buhoma at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Getting here: We are located close to the Buhoma gate of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Kanungu District, approximately 522 km from Kampala (Uganda’s capital), in the Gorilla Highlands of southwestern Uganda. Buhoma Community Rest Camp is behind the park gates (no vehicle fees apply) while Buhoma Community Haven Lodge is a 5-minute drive (15-minute walk) away, close to CTPH Gorilla Conservation Camp/Silverback Lodge.

Private Transportation/Self Drive: Kampala-Kabale-Kanungu-Buhoma: The route from Kampala to Kabale is a tarmac highway and covers an area of about 414 km (about 6 hour drive). The route from Kabale to Buhoma it is an additional 108 km and a murram road (laterite/clay material). This part of the drive takes an additional 4-5 hours and goes through Kanungu and then on to Buhoma. At the traffic circle during this section of the route turn left (in the direction of Kanyantorogo), and then take another left at the next traffic circle. You will pass by Ntumgarmo Tea Factory and through the village of Butogota. A right turn about 15 km from Bwindi is a signal you’re almost there.
Alternate Kabale Route: At the second junction on the Kisoro road sign labeled “Bwindi” you arrive at Buhoma via Ruhija. This route is the most scenic but a 4 wheel drive vehicle is often necessary.
Ntungamo - Rukungiri Route: About one kilometer after the town of Ntungamo turn right at the sign labeled Rukungiri; this road is tarmaced. At Rukungiri follow the signs for Kanungu where you will pick up the Kabale-Buhoma route at the traffic circle.
Public Transportation: There is a daily direct bus between Kampala and Butogota heading in both directions, for USh 35,000. The bus leaves Kampala around 6 am and arrives in Butogota around 6 pm. Thereafter a taxi can be taken for the last 17 km to Buhoma.
